The Corpus Christi Film is a Hoax

I've received two emails now supposedly as part of a petition to get a film called Corpus Christi banned. Corpus Christi is allegedly a filmed version of the controversial Terrence McNally play of the same name which depicts Jesus and his disciples as homosexuals.

The major problem with this petition is that it's a hoax. As far as I'm aware, there are no such plans to film such a play, and even if it were being produced on a shoestring budget somewhere in the hope that a handful of gay film festivals might show it, it's unlikely to come to a cinema / DVD store anywhere near anyone who is likely to be offended by it.

The funny thing is that it's not even a new hoax. I remember it the first time around from the late nineties when people at least had the excuse that they didn't really know what email was. FilmChat blogged about a recurrence in 2005 also mentioning the similarly suspicious Jesus porn film Him. In case anyone needs further proof, hoax spotting website Snopes, in a piece written c.2000, has plenty of information about it including a claim the fact that this rumour has been circulating since at least 1985. And the DVD Corpus Christi is simply a documentary about the historical Jesus. Whilst you're at it, you might like to glance at Snopes' religion category.

As a rule of thumb, emails asking you to forward them to lots of people - particularly if accompanied by any one of the many forms of emotional blackmail - are usually hoaxes.

On the other hand, it's great viral marketing. And it's now all over Facebook which guarantees it will not die.

Not had a chance to see it unfortunately. If I ever do, I'll post a review up.

I assumed it was probably a hoax and did a google search to confirm that. I found a website for the film/documentary, that at least from a quick look-through, appears to be quite real and not a hoax.

It is a documentary on the play, but not the play itself.

I may get a bunch of negative feedback from this but I think we should think about this a little more. I don't believe that Jesus was a homosexual, I want to say that out right. But he did spend his time with those that society scorned. When I look at the reactions of the religious in the trailers for the documentary, I do not see my God in their faces. I think we still need to love the sinner. Perhaps we need to look at our hearts and ask why we are so quick to judge the homosexual. I do have friend that are homosexuals that feel like trash when they come to the christian church, these do wish to fallow God. Yet so many point and sneer. It makes me think of the tax collector and the pharisee. I think our Pride in not being like them is worse than any sin we judge them to have.

Same sex contact has been seen broadly throughout the various species ranging from insects to birds to mammals. Bonobos, for example, engage in both hetero and homosexual sex. They do so frequently and often as a mechanism for reducing social tension/conflict. So, to answer your question: Yes, some animals engage in homosexual behavior.

After 16 years in theaters around the world and eight years in film production, the film "Corpus Christi: Playing With Redemption" is being realeased on October 14th, 2014. The film is a documentary and includes scenes from the play. But fear not, it is not saying Jesus or his disciples are gay, rather it explores where gay men and women find themselves at the table of faith if they choose. It also covers hot button issues like racial unrest, gun control and religious abuse but always in a gentle and loving way. The film, like the play, seeks to bridge a gap between the religious community and those that feel ostracized.

I absolutely agree with you 100 percen! How are we to show the love of Jesus to homosexuals through hate, when I speak for myself as being a sinner!!! Jesus didn't come to our planet to chill with the "holy" and pay them on the bad, he came for the poor, the sick, the lost and hurting, but most importantly, the sinners like me!

Joann ... that movie you linked to is a DOCUMENTARY from 2012 about a production of the play and not a film version of the play.
